The Edward Hotel in Gloucester & the Environment

Carbon Footprint

For those choosing to arrive by train or bus you will be glad to know that we\are just a short stroll from the stations which are centrally located.

Being so close to Gloucester's city centre means that guests can walk to the shops and restaurants, to the local tourist venues such as GL1, the Guildhall, Gloucester Docks, Gloucester Cathedral, the county records office, and to many businesses located in the city. Gloucester Royal Hospital and the Oxstalls Univerisity campus are very close by.

We employ local staff and encourage walking and cycling to work whenever practicable.

We are considering purchasing some basic 'free bicycles' for guests to use, nothing special enough to tour, just good enough to get about town and reduce the odd car journey or two!

Recycling and Composting

As far as we know, we are the only hotel in the area thot offers TWO bins in each room so that ALL possible rubbish is recycled. Anything compostable from rooms or the kitchen is eventually put onto our garden.

Energy Conservation

We have taken the usual steps of using low energy bulbs inside and outside where possible, added lagging and insulation, introduced a low usage towel option for guests, and have sourced Eco max boilers to replace the existing ones in the future. As well as regulating timer switches daily when necessary, staff are requested to reduce thermostats each morning when rooms are not in use.

Water Conservation

Our staff are aware of the need to conserve water, 'hippos' are used to reduce consumption as are water butts and the reduced number of baths in bedrooms in preference to showers. Where practicable water flow has been reduced.

Fair Trade and Local Produce

Our coffee is fairtrade we are trying to source tea. Sausages are local and we are trying to source local bacon, and free range eggs, that can compare in quality and price to our existing supplies. We use local or fairtrade fruit and vegetables when in season and will be growing our own tomatoes and grapes!

Eco Friendly Products

We have been sourcing eco friendly cleaning products that can perform to our satisfaction, quite a difficult task. If you have any tips please email us it will be appreciated.

Local Wildlife

Being as animal friendly as a carnivore can be, and being restricted by a city centre location, the main wildlife that we can encourage are birds and hedgehogs. There are bird feeders and bird boxes around the garden.
